Gallery Finds

1

I had a lot of fun looking for Sahlin Studio inspiration today. There are some gorgeous pages in the galleries and it is always hard to narrow it down! I chose a few of them for your viewing pleasure! Hopefully they will be an inspiration to you.

I love this page by domad, 3-2-1 meins.
The amazing blending, plus the amazing photos, plus the amazing extractions and design. I love it all!

I love the idea Kristi8004 had for her page, 5@5.
The list idea of recording her sons favorite things, will be such a great treasure down the road. Her title work is so creative and fun!

Isn't this page by Karin, Little mustache, so cute!
The treatment on that oh-so-sweet photo is just gorgeous. It goes so perfect with the vintage feel to the page. I love the layered paper strips and lace. So adorable!

I hope these layouts give you some ideas for scrapping your own memories. Be sure to check back each Wednesday for more gallery finds!

JOURNAL IT: A Beautiful Moment

5
Photobucket

Welcome to another journal it series. "Journal It" is where you can find help with journal inspiration or where you can find a quote that you can use on about on almost ANY layout. I hope this will help to inspire you. You could use the prompts in many different ways... you might use the prompt on your layout and stop right there, you may not need to journal more... Whereas other times these prompts might inspire you to write about something even deeper. Feel free to check out this weeks prompt below. If you missed any, you can check out any previous prompts. And be sure to come back because I'll be posting a new journaling prompt every other Monday!

Photobucket

Our lives are full of beautiful moments. That is the whole reason we scrap, isn't it? To capture and record those beautiful moments. Sometimes those memories are captured in a photo and don't even need additional journaling. The photo, itself, says it all. Some of them beg for the story to be told. Maybe you don't have a photo from the memory you want to record, and the journaling will tell the story.

Today I want you to focus on "A Beautiful Moment..." You can use this prompt as simply your title, or you can use it to jumpstart your journaling process.

You could:
1) Add just the sentiment to your page. It will still trigger you to see this beautiful memory as you're viewing the photographs! OR
2) Add this sentiment on your page, THEN think, what was this beautiful moment? Let it inspire you to think a little more? Was it the people? Was it an action? Was it a view? What IS the story?

Let the prompt inspire you to think of WHAT this beautiful moment was.
See where this can take you?

For example: As I was scrapping my photographs, thinking of the prompt in conjunction with the journal prompt, it got me a little emotional. Of course this is a beautiful moment... not only are my kiddos with their papa, but them spending time together, the little things that they did, AND the beautiful view. There were lots of beautiful little stories.

Hopefully this helps to make you inspired as well!!

FREEBIE!
.... and as a little bonus, I made up a piece of word art that I used in my layout.

Feel free to use it on any of your layouts.

Template Tutorial... and FREEBIE template

22
Photobucket

Today I want to share with you a great digital scrapping time saver – the Template! A template is basically a layout that is pre-designed. It has layers that you clip your papers and photos into, and layers that guide you where to place your elements and journaling. It is a great tool for new scrappers and old scrappers alike! I often use a template when my mojo has disappeared!

For those of you that are new to digital scrapping, I will give you step by step instructions on how to use a template. And for those of you that are already avid template users…just skip to the end of this post...there is a Sahlin Studio template for you to download for free!

The first thing you want to do is open up your template in your software program.

blog pic 1

I’m using CS3 for the tutorial today, but will also guide Photohop Elements users as well.

Once you open your template, go to File>Save As and give your template a new name so you don’t change the original. Templates can be used more than once. You can change its appearance by moving the elements around, changing the photos around, or even rotating it. To do this, just click Image>Rotate Canvas and choose which direction you want to rotate it.

blog pic 2

See how it gives the template a whole new look?!? You can make so many variations with one template!

blog post 3

For today, however, we will stick with the original design. I just wanted to give you some ideas on getting the most use out of your template.

With our template open, let's go ahead and open up a background paper first. When your background paper is open in your program, use the move tool to drag the paper onto your template.

blog pic 4

You will then drag your paper to the bottom of your layers palette being sure to place it directly above the layer labeled “background.”

blog pic 9

The next step is to clip your paper to the background layer. There are several ways to do this. I right click the layer in the layers palette and select “Create Clipping Mask.” Alternately you can use the shortcut Ctrl/Alt/G and it will do the same thing. Be sure you have the correct layer highlighted. Elements users will simply hit Ctrl/G.

blog pic 5

You will then right click the layer again, and choose “merge down.” You can see the merge down option in the picture above. Both CS and Elements users can click the shortcut Ctrl/E to achieve this step. Your new background will now be the paper you’ve chosen.

Next, I will open a photo and drag it onto my template.

blog pic 6

You will notice that my photo is bigger than it should be for the space in the template. We can adjust that. First we will bring the photo above the layer we want to clip it into. We will then clip it just as we did before (Alt/Ctrl/G for PS and Ctrl/G for PSE). I will need to resize my photo to fit the frame into which I’ve clipped it, before I merge it down. Using the move tool, I will resize my photo. To keep your photo in proportion, hold down the shift key as you resize it. Once it is resized properly, you can hit "enter" on your keyboard, or click the little check mark at the top of your screen to complete the transformation.

blog pic 7

Now you can merge your picture down (Ctrl/E).

You will continue these steps to clip papers and pictures to all the other layers. Normally each template layer is labeled so you know exactly what to put there. Here is what I did with my paper and photo layers:

blog pic 8

Now that my paper and photo layers are all done, I can move on to the fun part…embellishments! The red x’s and dots are guides for elements. You certainly do not have to follow them, but it is helpful when first starting out. Here is my final layout after adding all the fun extras:

Now it is your turn!
Here is a freebie template for you to try templates yourself!!

AND... that is not all!

Gallery Finds

1
Photobucket

Welcome to the first edition of Gallery Finds!

I love to look at layouts that my customers create! I am so inspired by all of you and I want to share that inspiration! Each week I'll be highlighting a layout or two created with Sahlin Studio products that I found out and about in the galleries.

As I was browsing the galleries my eye immediately caught heathergw's layout, Capture the Good Life.
Photobucket
The design is absolutely amazing and I love the grungy feel of the layout. The crops on the photos are fabulous and the design really portrays the raw emotions that you read about in her journaling. She shares about the loss of her friend and what that experience has taught her. A beautiful reminder to all of us!

Gizele Petrelli's layout, Festa, really sang!
Photobucket
All those bright colors and happy photos! I love the design and her fabulous use of elements! Such fun page!

I love how both of these layouts captured real life! That is what it really is all about - preserving memories. I hope these layouts were as much of an inspiration to you as they were to me! Be sure to check back each Wednesday to see more great gallery finds!
